For Writers: Read, Read, Read

Today's rule is simple. To be a writer, you must read. To be a good writer, you must read. To be an excellent writer, you must read.

It's a travesty to hear aspiring writers confess that they don't like reading or don't read much because they don't have time. Keep that to yourself.

Not only should a writer read the reference books on the business and the craft, but she should also read and continue to read EVERYTHING. The idea is not about copying a particular author's style. Reading works from various genres teaches the author how a story unfolds, the pacing techniques, the way the characters' development occur.

Read new authors to see their style emerge. Read bestsellers to understand what makes them a hit with fans. Read the average author with a sizeable backlist because longetivity counts for something.

Open your mind--read a book.
